Swing to Success

Captains Charity day brings in £1600 for children with Cancer UK.

Marham Golf Club held their annual Captain’s Day early July and a huge effort was made on the day bringing in over £1600 towards this years chosen charity, Children With Cancer UK.

This years club captain John O’Connell and club members enjoyed a day on the course in aid of this rewarding charity. John had kindly received a large number of prizes from various sponsors both on and off station as well as from club members themselves. The club also received sponsorship on the day providing banners and advertising on all the tees as well as raffle donations with a post match auction of some high value goods provided.

The golf was followed by a BBQ and a local entertainer, Ian Brown, who provided his vocal talent with some swing numbers and a karaoke in which members could join in on a fun evening.

With only a small membership population at the club, the day’s efforts were outstanding and a credit to those involved. It’s been a continued struggle recruiting, at times retaining, club members especially given the amount of work being carried out around the course. To this end the club has introduced reduced fees to Service personnel (£150 pro rata) to encourage the use of this valuable Station facility; despite all the ground work and course maintenance demands, the club remains vibrant, strong and very much active as this latest event has proven.

The club captain, would like to express his gratitude to all who helped make this day such a great event and his real winner on the day being charity:

In addition, the club also had a very successful tour back in May when 8 of its members went on their annual trip to Spain with those taking part raising a further £500 for the QE hospital King’s Lynn the money raised went to their Excel Appeal, for Excellence in Elderly Care.

The cheque was presented last month from left to right John O’Connell Club Capt, CT Dale King Vice Capt, Nick Chase & Terry Carver Tour organisers to Ms L Morlaas QE Fundraising Executive.

Our Station Golf Club continues to offer RAF Personnel and Civilians very reasonable golf membership rates on a well maintained course, as well as an opportunity to raise money for worthwhile causes.  Why not come and give it a try?

Finally, the Club Senior Section has reached the final of the Norfolk Barnard Trophy for 2017 with the reward of a match against King’s Lynn Golf Club.  The match will take place at Swaffham Golf Club on Wednesday 30 Aug 17 so good luck to all on what is a great achievement in reaching the final of this prestigious competition.
