New SWO at Marham
Having been in post for just under a month I thought it prevalent to introduce myself. I am WO Alan Wanbon. An RAF Regiment Gunner by trade, I joined the RAF in 1980.
My career has taken me all over the world including four tours in Germany along with Operational detachments to the Falklands, Belize, Kuwait and Iraq. I consider myself extremely fortunate and have thus far enjoyed a variable trade related career. Primarily my career has been within the Ground Based Air Defence world where I have served at every rank with Rapier bar WO. In-between my Air Defence role I have served with the United States Air Force guarding Cruise Missiles based at RAF Greenham Common, also 33 (Puma) Sqn at Odiham along with Tactical Communications Wing whilst at Brize Norton. In addition I served at Defence Centre Winterbourne Gunner as an instructor and course designer. As with any Gunner I spent my time at the RAF Regiment depot at RAF Honington both on Squadron’s and as Officer Commanding Ground Defence Training. More recently I undertook the post of first Military Liaison Officer based at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham, a tour that has had a profound effect on my life’s outlook to all 3 Services and the array of highly commendable supporting charities. From there I entered the world of NATO, serving at NATO HQ Air Ramstein before returning to the UK and to Marham at the beginning of the year. It is indeed a great honour and privilege to undertake the role as Station Warrant at RAF Marham. Within days of my arrival I was heavily involved with the visit of Her Majesty, thankfully my predecessor along with a great team (that’s all of you) made the day run smoothly.
Since my arrival it is clearly evident that RAF Marham is a highly professional unit who has a great association with the local populace. I am extremely keen to maintain this relationship and would welcome any ideas to further complement our high standing. On the flip side, I am now at the end of what I call my “sponge mode”. Having been bombarded with everyone’s views and issues, I have absorbed these points and have now started to squeeze the sponge. I eagerly await the results.
Finally and most importantly, as we focus on the delivery of our Commander’s intent we also need to remain focused on upholding and maintaining those all important basic standards.
