InterStations Hockey, Akrotiri
Each year RAF Marhams’ Hockey team ‘The Marham Matadors’ take their skills to RAF Akrotiri to compete in the inter-stations Hockey tournament over two days.
This year was no exception and a team of 14 flew to RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus. The tri-service team from RAF Marham consisted of junior ranks of all capabilities and experience.
11 teams in total took part and comprised mostly of other RAF station hockey teams, with the addition of a prison service team, a REME team, an Int Corps team and a team of Fusiliers. The tournament for ‘Marham Matadors’ consisted of six games; three wins, a draw and two losses which saw the matadors finish the tournament on a high and in a position to go for the cup. RAF Marham competed very well for the cup with a morning win against the Int Corps but were knocked out by RAF Wittering who fought well for their win. The game was lost on penalty flicks, and keeper SAC(T) Vince Johnson played very well but unfortunately to no avail. Due to RAF Wittering getting a ‘bye’ on a previous game to ours, RAF Marham was put through to the plate cup to play the REME team. After many unfinished plays, on both sides, and a lot of competitiveness the game came down to penalty flicks, and unfortunately, the game was again lost to the REME, making the ‘Marham Matadors’ the equivalent in hockey of the England football team.
Goal scorers were: Cpl Stu Parker, SAC(T) Andy Saunders, SAC Dan Inkley, and SAC Yvonne Allenby.
For all interested station hockey takes place on Tuesday evenings 17:30 – 19:00 on the Astroturf, everyone is welcome!
