The Shooting Team of 2620 (County of Norfolk) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force Regiment recently returned from the RAF Regt Skill-at-Arms Competition at Bisley having won the top three trophies which can be awarded to RAF Regt Squadrons.
The Team, lead by Flight Sergeant Jimmy Martin (from Bury St Edmunds), comprised Reservists, Lance Corporal Robin Batchelor (from Swanton Morley), Senior Aircraftsmen Pete Nicholson (from Saxmundham) and Alex Sait (from St Neots) and Leading Aircraftsmen Tom Waite (from Norwich) and LAC Kevin Stubley (from Cottenham, Cambs), could only afford the time to put in three days’ practice at Thetford Ranges before travelling down to Bisley.
Despite this, they still managed to take the Lloyds Cup (awarded to the Top RAF Regt Sqn) – only the third time that a Reserve Sqn has won this Trophy since 1942! The Individual Lloyds Cup (awarded to Jimmy Martin for being the Top RAF Regt Sqn Individual shot), The Augustas Walker Bowl (the Team Efficiency Trophy awarded for top combined scores) and The Burridge Cup (for the Team Shoot which involves varying events from 100 to 500m). In addition, the team also won two individual Gold and five individual Silver medals.
The Squadron Commander, Squadron Leader Jonathan White said “It really is a remarkable achievement, that a team of Reservists have won such prestigious Team and Individual trophies against such stiff competition. It says a lot for the commitment and skills of these lads. They can all be very proud of what they have achieved”.
