TIW’s Charity Anthony Nolan

The Anthony Nolan charity is the chosen charity of Tactical Imagery-Intelligence Wing. The charity funds vital work in research and donor matching for people in desperate need of a life saving bone marrow transplant.

Currently, they can only find a matching donor for half of the people in desperate need of a lifesaving transplant. The charity aims to provide a transplant to every person with a blood cancer who needs their help.

Janet Qualters (previously Janet Short) is the Wing Charities Coordinator and each year organises a clinic at RAF Marham, where a simple test can be undertaken and the results put on the bone marrow register to identify potential donors. Janet is hoping to organise clinics at other RAF bases and on the 24th April this year held the first one at RAF Halton, soon to be followed by a clinic on the 18th July at RAF Cranwell, which Janet and SAC Becky Bateman from TIW will help to organise with the Trust. The next RAF Marham Anthony Nolan Clinic is to be held at the Chaplaincy Centre on the 19th September from 11am till 2pm where there will be homemade cakes and refreshments on sale, raffles and of course, where you can register to become a potential bone marrow donor, it is hoped that the clinic will be well supported.

Fundraising continues to go from strength to strength, with personnel using their own time to find new and exciting ways to support the charity. SAC John Stride raised over £275 from participating and coordinating a Para’s 10 event, a test of physical stamina and fitness. This was followed by the annual GEAR run in King’s Lynn, where SAC James Potter organised the Wing’s team.

To counter all of the fitness and running Cpl Dan Ferry organised a Marham Bake-Off which was a great success, highlighting some great baking talents around the station – it also raised a good deal of money for the charity.

A wedding themed Summer Ball is being planned by two of the wives from TIW, Caroline Dobson and Laura King, the date is the 05 July and all proceeds will go to the charity – tickets are available from the HIVE. This is the first time anyone outside of the wing has done this and it is greatly appreciated.

As usual, there will be an Anthony Nolan tent next to the TIW display at Families Day, where you will be able to buy raffle tickets and also find out more about the charity and even join the volunteer bone marrow register.

On the 28th September there is also a charity night with a Burlesque theme at the Sandringham Centre with all proceeds going to the charity. Tickets for this evening will soon be on sale and if you wish to find out more you can contact Janet on Ext: 6292 or visit the HIVE.

On 13th May Janet was invited by the Chief Executive of the Anthony Nolan to their Annual Reception at Carlton House Terrace in London where she was accompanied by SAC Anna Hutchinson, where the Trust thanked the Wing for their continuing contribution to the charity, This was a great honour and one which was thoroughly enjoyable for the two people lucky enough to go. Whilst at the reception, Janet was invited to attend a laboratory visit to see how the work is carried out with regard to ongoing research.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who continues to support us; to date TIW have raised in excess of £65,000 and recruited nearly 350 onto the register for the Anthony Nolan Trust. This charity helps anyone who needs it and is not targeted to a specific minority. Please look out for the clinic details and check the Anthony Nolan website at www.anthonynolan.org for more information.
