The Challenge Project
RAF Marham recently hosted a youth activities liaison project called ‘The Challenge’.
The Challenge was a specially designed programme funded and supported by a number of local agencies to offer the young people in West Norfolk who are at risk of disengaging the chance to realise and reach their potential. Working in partnership with the Norfolk Constabulary, West Norfolk Borough Council, King’s Lynn Academy, The Matthew project, Edale Activity Centre and King’s Lynn Arts Centre, the project was designed around preventative work, building self esteem and raising aspirations.
Twenty five 14-16 year old males came to RAF Marham for the four day residential and 16 of them successfully completed the project. They were given the opportunity to conduct team building, leadership, raise self-esteem, build confidence, engender communication skills and learn respect in a controlled, disciplined, military atmosphere within a structured environment. Participants were expected to demonstrate respect, teamwork, listening skills, social skills, discipline, physical fitness, effective resolve and determination during the activities which varied from team building exercises, confidence course, endurance march, Mobile Team Challenge and section visits.
It was a hugely successful project and we are looking to host it again for females of the same age. It was rewarding to work with the youngsters who gave some fantastic feedback and will hopefully benefit from the experience. Big thanks to all those involved in making it a success.
