SSAFA Update

I hope you found our article in last month’s Marham Matters useful; if you missed it, it covered what SSAFA does and how we the In-Service Committee at RAF Marham are involved with the workings of the charity on our Station. Since writing that article, we have been incredibly busy with the planning of lots of fundraising events.

We held a gate collection as part of the national BIG SSAFA COLLECTION WEEK in May whereby our team of volunteers from the committee and others who offered their services hounded those driving, walking, running and cycling onto and from camp for their pennies and spare change. The final total from this has been confirmed at £721.71! An awesome total and a huge thank you to everyone who contributed, the money SSAFA raise at Marham will go directly to help those in need.

Also a massive thank you to all the collection team volunteers and also to the MPGS whose support was invaluable. Thank you SO much to everyone who donated, especially those people who said “I’m sorry, this is all I have with me”, those of you who gave very generously and also to those people who stopped, donated and told us that SSAFA had been able to help them or their families. Don’t forget that the money raised from this gate collection and from all our fundraising events stays on this Station. It is used to help people with whom we work, live and socialise as part of our lives in and around RAF Marham and you can be sure that if you support our work here, the money will be put to use where it is most needed for people from this Station, whatever their role.

We have some big events coming up in the next few weeks. Look out for the BIG BREW UP 24th to 26th June where our team will be selling cakes in Louis Café Bar between 11.30am to 1pm. ISS have very kindly offered to support this event by allowing us to use this location and also by supplying cakes for us to sell and we would like to extend our thanks to them for this.

As part of this week, Marham Cherry Tree Academy will be holding a big CAMO DAY event on Friday 26th June! Camo Day is the international SSAFA fundraiser for children with the aim being to “Dress up, blend in! Put your pennies in the tin!” The event at the Marham school will be supported admirably by various sections from the Station allowing the children a first hand and close up view of some of the things that RAF Marham does  so brilliantly. Mrs Webb is incredibly enthusiastic about making sure the day is fun and exciting for the children and we will be pulling out all the stops to help her. We already have one or two ‘special’ guests lined up to pay a visit!

Plans are also underway for our presence at Families and Friends day in July. You can rest assured that we will be making every effort to meet the vintage 1940’s theme for the day and hope that we will again, have a fun and successful event.

I hope that by raising the profile of SSAFA on our Station through events such as those mentioned, we can encourage more people to use the services we offer and to be prepared to support us when we need your help too.
