Ride for RAFA

On Tuesday 14th June, SAC(T) Grant Smith and Calum Parker, along with their support team, Fg Off Ruck from 31 Sqn, Chf Tech Garnett from 5 Sqn, RAF Waddington and SAC(T) Hurley and Pope from Tornado Structures Flight returned to RAF Marham to complete their charity bike ride – Ride for RAFA.

The challenge had seen them cover just over 1,250 miles in ten days visiting 17 RAF Stations along the way. The last leg of their journey had a slight detour as they rode into King’s Lynn to be greeted by the Deputy Mayor of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, Officer Commanding Base Support Wing from RAF Marham and members of the Royal Air Force Association. The team attended a small reception in the Town Hall before continuing onto RAF Marham where they were met at the Station Gates by the Station Commander, Group Captain Pete Rochelle, Station personnel and family and friends.

SAC(T) Grant Smith said “What a special journey seeing some amazing parts of the UK I didn’t know existed. It was a roller coaster ride with some really high points and some definite lows. To be greeted by the Deputy Mayor and to be presented with a certificate of thanks in the Town Hall was fantastic. There were so many thoughts and memories of the past two weeks going through my mind on the journey back to Marham. The highlights for me were riding across the Forth Road Bridge and the Snowdonia National Park. Also the support we received from the public was very touching and made us proud to be in the RAF.

It was overwhelming to see the support as we were greeted by a crowd of people welcoming us home at the gates of Marham and it was so nice to see my family again, this is certainly something I will never forget. We have so many people to thank for their support throughout the challenge”.

The team have so far raised a staggering amount of £9,000 and they hope to reach £10,000 once all their sponsorship donations have been added.
