RAF Marham’s Centenary Year Takes Off!

2016 marks the centenary of RAF Marham and the Station will be holding 100 events throughout the year to celebrate this special milestone.

The celebrations to mark the centenary officially launched on 19th January 2016 with a host of local dignitaries, including The Lord Mayor of Norwich and The Worshipful Mayors of Downham Market, Swaffham and King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, visiting the Station for the unveiling of the centenary artwork displayed on all 3 Gate Guardians, and a tour of the RAF Marham Heritage Centre.

The celebrations will continue throughout the course of 2016 with events being coordinated by the Centenary Committee, headed by myself as the Project Officer. To mark this special occasion the committee is working on producing an RAF Marham centenary painted tail fin to adorn a Tornado GR4, an RAF Marham Centenary Coin and a special aircraft print. Events will be occurring at theStation with highlights including the burial of a time capsule in the Bull Roundabout, a boxing night and a whisky tasting session (including a specially produced RAF Marham centenary whisky bottle) both occurring in March, a ‘Marham Mudder’ endurance event and the 2016 Friends & Families Day. Around the local area, King’s Lynn and Downham Market will have flowerbeds dedicated to the RAF Marham and there will be an event involving the ‘Tornado’ Locomotive steam train. RAF Marham will also play a large part in the Royal Norfolk Show in June.

Squadron Leader Donnellan is the Deputy Project Officer and is aided by 3 coordinators, one from each of IX (B), 12(B) and 31 Squadrons – to enable at least one coordinator to be available throughout the course of the year. The Committee is looking for volunteers of all ranks to assist with the running of events during this centenary year from all areas across RAF Marham. Personnel interested in joining the team should contact the coordinators using the following details:MRM-MCOgroup@mod.uk
