RAF Marham wins prestigious award
RAF Marham have won The Firmin Sword of Peace Single Service Award for 2016.
The award is given to the unit or establishment that is judged to have made the most valuable contribution to humanitarian activities by establishing good and friendly relations with the inhabitants of any community at home or overseas during that year.
RAF Marham’s submission for the award centred around the many activities that it had conducted throughout it’s centenary year and its support to the local community. Whilst continuing with operations in Syria and Iraq and dealing with the disruption of infrastructure works at the base in preparation for arrival of the new Lightning aircraft the station also supported major county and charitable events as well as initiatives to support the local communities. Celebrating Marham’s centenary provided our people with an opportunity to raise money, do something amazing or challenging and generally enjoy being part of the wider West Norfolk community by getting involved.
With over 120 events undertaken throughout the year, raising over £70,000 for charities, the Station has seen; boxing nights, charity hikes, dining-in nights, charity runs (from turkey trots to 100 miles in 24 hours) brewery beer dedications and tastings, time capsules, an Iron-a-thon and so many other inventive, fun and challenging events all for good causes.
The engagement footprint was not confined to the base; the Royal Norfolk Show used the centenary as its focus for the closing ceremony, involving 400 station personnel and 23 vehicles. Marham personnel also took part in 14 parade ceremonies around the county, including two freedom parades as well as smaller representations for Remembrance Sunday at local villages and memorials.
Furthermore RAF Marham’s good work involving local schools has really taken root during 2016 with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) opportunities being provided to local children and the Jon Egging Trust Blue Skies Project now a regular interaction with local schools and pupils.
RAF Marham Station Commander Group Captain Ian ‘Cab’ Townsend said “To receive recognition for the amazing work that the people of RAF Marham did during 2016 is true testament to the hardwork ,dedication and enthusiasm of all those at the station and also in our local community who supported us throughout the year. This award is a fantastic accolade for RAF Marham and is very well deserved.”
RAF Marham will be presented with the Firmin Sword of Peace at a later date.
