RAF Marham Personnel Support Anthony Nolan Heroes Day
Personnel from RAF Marham’s Tactical Imagery- Intelligence Wing (TIW) dressed up as Super Heroes and played in football and netball matches in support of the charity, Anthony Nolan. Anthony Nolan is the UK’s blood cancer charity and bone marrow register matching potential donors to people with a blood cancer such as leukaemia.
Janet Qualters, a civilian member of TIW lost her son Daniel to leukaemia when he was just 2½ years old and she has been supporting the charity now for a number of years by fundraising and organising recruitment days for the bone marrow register. The personnel of TIW have joined Janet and adopted Anthony Nolan as their Wing charity. Over the past sevenyears they have raised just over £80,000!
As well as devoting a lot of her spare time to raising money for the charity Janet and TIW personnel also organise recruitment days to get people to sign up to the bone marrow register. This is done by taking a simple saliva swab. The recruitment days have been held at RAF Marham and also RAF Cranwell, RAF Halton and RAF Wyton. To date 6 volunteers have gone on to donate their bone marrow with three of those coming from RAF Marham. Normally the number of volunteers who go on to become a match is 1 in 1,000 but the ratio from the recruitment days organised by TIW is an unprecedented 1 in 78!! The best results that Anthony Nolan have had.
Janet said, “I have been organising clinics and fundraising as TIW Charity Co-ordinator for over seven years now, and it never ceases to amaze me as to the generosity of people. The help and support TIW have received from the various Station Commanders and personnel has been overwhelming and Gp Capt Smyth the new Station Commander, although new in post, has given his wholehearted support. Personnel from the RAF and RAF Marham have given their support to this cause and to know that we have helped to give six people the chance of life, is humbling and I am so grateful to everyone who has made this possible.”
Catherine Miles the Fundraising Director for Anthony Nolan attended the event to accept a cheque from TIW for this years fundraising efforts that amount to over £7,000.
