RAF Marham Bulls Rugby Club

An excellent turn out for the first training session of the year has led to a progressive improvement for the club, starting the year strong!

To kick things off, the Bull’s Captain, SAC (T) Spencer has these few words: “Mid way through the season now and a lot has changed for the club. We have managed to get a regular fixtures list up-held, something that all stations have found difficult over the past few years. We have also maintained large numbers to both training and matches. This is all down to the players and coaches themselves. The team has really started to find its feet, with a lot of new players both to the club and the game. The enjoyment of every game has been apparent not only through the team on the pitch, but to any of the spectators who have managed to get down. For me personally, the aim for the rest of the season is to keep the interest and enjoyment within the team at its highest, but also to ensure that we are not just competitive but that the wins start to come.

I would just like to add my thanks to the players for all their efforts and to the station as a whole for allowing all aspects of the game to run at the highest of standards.”

The Bull’s first game back was at home against Honington.

The Bull’s coach, CT Dale Windle, had this match report for the first home fixture of 2015: “Honington arrived at Marham with a completely different side to the one we faced before Christmas. Undeterred the Bulls set out their stall early, with some fantastic hits early on from SAC’s McNulty and Smith on the Honington centre partnership, which saw them hesitant on the ball.

The pack saw a late change with SAC Taylor stepping up to play Hooker. Even with us being at least a stone lighter man per man in the pack compared to Honington, we still dominated them, which was an immense effort from 1-8.

After 20 min the score line still remained 0-0, but some good phase play unfortunately saw Honington take the first points. The next 20 min remained tight with some fantastic scrambled defence from both teams.

The second half returned the same intensity as the first, both teams playing exciting expansive rugby. A fantastic set of interplay between Forwards and Backs was rewarded in a try for SAC(T) Spencer (Captain). After a successful restart the Bulls were back on the charge, what followed was ten minutes  of the best rugby I have seen this season. This was rewarded by a try for SAC Windibank.

Honington replied with another score but from the restart, a brave run from SAC Hughes put the Bulls on the front foot. Honington were then camped in their own 22 with the Bulls attacking with both forwards and backs. The ball retention, rucking and mauling was of the highest standard. Not through want of trying these attacks did not result in a score”.

The match finished up;  Marham 19 – 34 Honington.

The club would like to offer a huge thanks to the supporters that braved the weather! The club is continuing to grow, with numbers growing week upon week for training. The club meets at 1730 on a Monday at the astro turf and 1145 on a Tuesday on the station sports pitch. All abilities are welcome, please come along!

With games still to play against Coningsby and Wyton, the Bull’s are displaying the qualities needed to bring home some impressive wins.

And finally, the Club is striving to promote rugby as a sport that all can be involved in. With that in mind, the female population of Marham are invited to attend training sessions with the aim of growing a competitive women’s team and creating a joint male and female rugby club at RAF Marham.
