RAF Marham Air Cadet Service
RAF Marham resounded to the sound of drums recently as around 50 cadets from five local ATC units marched behind squadron banners to the Chaplaincy Centre.
The event was 864 (Marham) DF’s service to mark ATC Sunday, held to celebrate the formation of the Air Training Corps in 1941. Normally held in February, this year’s event was postponed until March due to the snow.
Marham’s own ATC unit was joined by staff and cadets from Watton, Downham Market, Swaffham and King’s Lynn squadrons who formed up on the main car park and marched past Station HQ where the salute was taken by the Station Commander, Group Captain David Cooper.
The service, arranged by Padre Dawn Colley, was attended by over 80 staff, cadets and parents. Readings were given by cadets and staff followed by addresses from the Station Commander and the Padre. The service ended with a renewal of the Air Cadet promise. Afterwards, the cadets had the opportunity to meet the Station Commander over refreshments.
Commenting on the event, Group Captain Cooper said: “I was extremely proud to take the salute from a well-executed Air Training Corps parade on a beautiful day at RAF Marham. It was an honour to be invited to participate in this Annual Parade which so many Air Cadets, leaders and parents attended.”
Padre Colley said: “It was a privilege to be invited to lead an act of worship for ATC Sunday. The sense of enthusiasm gained from the numbers attending, their discipline in marching and their attentiveness during the service all made the occasion worthwhile. Youth today often get bad press but it was heart warming to see so many youth participating in an organisation that strives to develop good qualities of character in creative and adventurous ways. The cadets were a credit to their leaders.”
Flt Lt Tony Hall, OC 864 (Marham) DF, said: “My thanks go to the Station Commander for making this a special event for us and to Padre Colley for all her hard work. The parade looked and sounded marvellous and the support we received from the local ATC squadrons is much appreciated. We hope to make this an annual event.”
Marham’s Air Cadet Flight is open to boys and girls from age 13. For more details, contact Tony Hall on 07900 518153 or by Email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
