Nuffield Trust Grant for Marquee

In May 2013 IX (B) Squadron applied for funding from the Nuffield Trust, towards the purchase price of a large marquee.

The purpose built Belfry recreation facility on the South West HAS site was proving to be too small for squadron personnel to hold functions for more than half the squadron at a time. A permanent extension was beyond the means of squadron funds and also outside public spending opportunities, so a marquee was deemed to be the best solution.

After research of marquee suppliers three prices were obtained for a 14m x 6m commercial standard marquee, complete with lining, floor covering, lighting and heating. Quotes were also obtained for trestle style furniture to fill the marquee. The preferred suppliers were selected and the application despatched with the help of Flt Lt Gary Walker, OC RAF Marham Community Support Flight, including a commitment from the Squadron to cover 20% of the cost from entertainment funds. Subsequently in July, IX(B) Squadron received the news that the application had been successful and they had been allocated a grant from the Nuffield Trust for the purchase of the marquee.

After obtaining permission through the siting board process, the marquee was finally erected in November, joined to the Belfry by means of a walkway and was opened on 3rd December by RAF Marham Station Commander, Gp Capt H Smyth OBE DFC ADC MA RAF. The Marquee has greatly enhanced the recreation facility and will enable personnel from across the Station to utilise the whole establishment for functions in the future. The Nuffield Trust for the Forces of the Crown was founded in 1939 by the late Lord Nuffield and exists to promote the welfare and efficiency of the Forces of the Crown either by the provision of facilities for recreation or by any other means. The Trust therefore finances recreational and welfare amenities and facilities that are likely to be of lasting benefit to the Armed Forces but which are not provided by public funds and which are beyond the resources of other Service funds.

The Nuffield Trust has supported projects both small and large across the Services, for example funding canal boats, minibuses and as this article shows, marquees. The application process was simple, well supported and a quick decision was forthcoming. Could your Squadron, Section or social club benefit from you spending a small amount of time researching and submitting an application?
