100 Miles for 100 Years

An Officer from RAF Marham has completed a 100 mile run in less than 24 hours. The run which took place on the base began at midday and continued through the night to the following midday. The route took Flt Lt Philips 16 times around the perimeter track.

Flight Lieutenant Si Philips an RAF engineer, decided to take on this incredible challenge after experiencing the help that Macmillan had provided for his family after his father was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago.His father was the inspiration for the run, as Flt Lt Philips wanted to give something back to the charity which had helped his family so much. He said before the challenge, “Without the support Macmillan have shown, I don't know if my Dad would still be around today to continue fighting his illness. They have always shown the compassion and support when he has needed it most and I don't know what we would do without them; they are life-savers.”

The heat of recent days had subsided giving way to constant rain but mild and humid conditions. With a support team of colleagues running alongside in stages and the medics based at Marham close by, the challenge rested with Flt Lt Philips and months of training to beat the clock and clock up the miles.

Completing 100 miles about half an hour before midday, Flt Lt Philips ran up to Station Headquarters to raptous applause, and to be greeted by Station Commander Group Captain Rich Davies.

Flt Lt Philips said, “This has been the hardest physical and mental challenge I have ever attempted. I’ve pushed myself far beyond the limits of what I thought were possible. I am proud to be supporting Macmillan and also RAF charity RAFA, as both of these charities rely on public donations though, which is why I have chosen to do the best I can for both of them, just as they do their best every day to help those in need.”
