Busy Start for Marham Cadets
Cadets from 864 (Marham) DF Air Training Corps have had a busy start to the year. January started with a briefing held in the chaplaincy centre for parents who were updated by staff on the unit’s activities and given details of forthcoming events.
The parents who attended said that they found it very useful. OC 864DF said that it would become a regular event.
In February, Marham hosted a parade and service for ATC Sunday. Over sixty cadets from Marham, Watton, King’s Lynn and Swaffham attended the event. Led by the cadet band from Watton Squadron and with standards flying, the cadets marched past Station HQ where the salute was taken by the Station Commander. During the service, taken by station Padre Rev Mike Hall, cadets and staff gave readings and an address was given by Group Captain Cooper who said afterwards that it was a pleasure for him to attend and that he was once again impressed with the turnout of the attending units. He went on to say: “The cadets form a strong foundation for the Royal Air Force’s future capability and I am delighted that we have so many young people who recognize the benefits that joining the cadets can bring to them.”
The following weekend saw the cadets taking part in a community project at Marham Gardening Club where they dug foundations for and erected a poly tunnel which is to be used for, among other things, an outdoor classroom for the children of Marham Infant School. OC 864DF, Flt Lt Tony Hall said: “The cadets had a great day and really enjoyed helping to put something back into the community that provides so much for them.”
March started with a trip to London where a group of cadets visited the Bomber Command Memorial, had a guided tour of the RAF’s own church, St Clement Dane’s, and spent an afternoon at the RAF Museum at Hendon. Despite the bitterly cold conditions, an enjoyable time was had by all.
Due to postings, 864DF is due to lose some staff during 2013. If you are interested in helping out as ATC Uniformed Staff, Service Helper or Civilian Instructor and can spare a few hours on a Monday evening and the occasional weekend, please get in touch as below.
Marham’s Air Cadet unit is open to boys and girls aged between 13 and 16 from both service and civilian families. For more information contact Tony Hall on 07900 518153 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
