31 Squadron Challenge Base Support Wing to Lift 31,000 Tonnes

OC Base Support Wing, Wg Cdr Neil Tomlin has been challenged by OC 31 Squadron, Wg Cdr Rich Yates to match them tonne for tonne in their challenge to lift 31,000 tonnes whilst they are away on deployment. OC BSW has accepted the challenge on behalf of the Wing!

The challenge is to ‘lift’ as much weight possible over the next four months and we are hoping that all BSW sections will pull together and rise to this challenge.

It will be the responsibility of each individual to record their weight lifting achievements on a ‘trust’ basis. Any exercises undertaken in the gym can be recorded in the BSW folder in the foyer of the Ped Flight. Exercises undertaken outside of the gym should be recorded and the results forwarded to the Media Comms Office who will keep track of the running total.

Body Weight exercises to be recorded as follows:
Weight lifted in a move (a curl, press, lift etc) – record weight lifted in 1 move x how many repetitions.

Pull Up and Dips from Parallel Bars:
1 repetition = 1 x Body Weight

Press Ups, Sit Ups, Standing Squats:
1 repetition = ½ x Body Weight

As many staff as possible in BSW are encouraged to take part, as OC BSW is keen to make sure that we don’t get too thrashed by 31 Squadron. The challenge will start on Monday 18th March and continue to mid July, but if anyone in the Wing has already undertaken any exercises over the last two weeks that could count towards the total, please record those. The challenge is in support of two fantastic local charities, Scotties Little Soldiers and Tapping House Hospice. We will try and get some collection buckets out and about and if anyone wants to get sponsored whilst lifting, then any extra money will be gratefully received!

There are some ‘alternative’ suggestions as to what can officially count as lifting weights.

Here are a few of them:
Catering Squadron: Lifting sacks of potatoes
Chaplaincy: Christening babies
SHQ: Answering telephone, lifting pen
…if you can come up with any other ideas or suggestions please let us know!
